How to Login in PuTTY using ID and Password?

We had known in our previous article that how to install PuTTY in computer and also to know how to generate SSH private through PuTTYgen? But knowing this is not enough, you should also be able to login to your server through PuTTY software. Today we will know about this, and in the end you will understand completely how to login to your server through IP address in PuTTY?

What are the things needed to login to your server through PuTTY?

If you want to login to your server through IP address, then you will need 3 choices.

• IP Address
• User ID
• Password

You get these three things when you setup your server.

For example- When you configure your droplet (server) on Digitalocean, you get IP Address, User ID (which is usually Root) and Password (which you set).

If you want to login to your server through SSH private key, then you will need 2 choices.

• SSH Private key
• Passphrase

Today we will learn to login to our server through IP address using PuTTY software, so we should know.

How to Login in PuTTY using IP Address?

Step 1: Start PuTTY

If you chose to create a desktop icon during the PuTTY install, you can simply start the software by double-clicking the PuTTY icon on the computer’s desktop. Or else, do a PuTTY search and press the Enter key.

If you have not yet installed PuTTY in your computer, then first you have to install PuTTY in your computer so that you can login to your server through PuTTY.

Step 2: Login to the server through IP address

When the software starts , a window called PuTTY Configuration opens, through which you can login to your server.

1. Host Name (or IP address) – Here you have to enter the IP address of your server.
2. Port- This default remains 22.
3. Click on the Open button.

When you connect to a server for the first time, you see a PuTTY Security Alert dialog about the server’s host key not being cached in the registry. This is normal when you are connecting to a server for the first time. All you have to do is click on the Yes button here .

In front of login as: you have to write your ID. The default id of any server is root . After typing the ID, press Enter .

Now you have to type your password, whatever password you type, you will not see it. All you have to do is type the password and press the Enter key . If you want to paste your password , then right click to paste , then press Enter key .

By doing just that, you will be connected to your server.
